The European Commission (EU) is providing € 1 billion to support Ukraine and host countries fleeing the war.
This was stated by the President of the institution Ursula von der Leyen during his participation in a charity event in the Polish capital Warsaw to raise funds for those fleeing the war in Ukraine and rebuild the country devastated by the conflict.
According to her, EUR 600 million will be for Ukraine, for the authorities in the country, and partly for the UN. The estimated funding for first-line countries to help refugees is 400m euros, Ursula von der Leyen said.
The charity event, called Stand Up for Ukraine, was broadcast worldwide and raised more than € 10 billion. It was organized by the European Union and the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and included world leaders, as well as celebrities such as Elton John, Alanis Morissette, Billy Isle, Annie Lennox, and Chris Rock.
More than 9 billion euros for refugees in Ukraine were collected in 90 minutes
More than 9.1 billion euros in donations, loans, and grants from countries, companies, and individuals were raised during a 90-minute global donor event on Saturday.
The “Let’s Stand Up for Ukraine” donation campaign (#StandUpForUkraine) was broadcast online from Warsaw in tribute to Poland’s efforts to shelter more than 2.5 million Ukrainian refugees.
The European Commission, represented by Ursula von der Leyen, said it was allocating an additional 1 billion euros, 400 million, of which to Ukraine’s border states and 600 million to the government in Kyiv.
