As summer temperatures rise across the US, many consumers are seeing an increase in their electricity bills as well. The average monthly bill per customer in 2021 was $121, CBS reports.
Consumers can keep their homes cooler by using blackout curtains or blinds and keeping them on during the sunniest part of the day to save on electricity. Specialists could also provide recommendations to make a home more energy efficient.
A smart thermostat can also automate temperature changes and reduce electricity bills. The device uses WiFi to connect to an app on the homeowner’s phone. Some models also have the option to monitor when the user’s phone is not in the home and adjust cooling or heating accordingly. Also, the system can be controlled from anywhere as long as it has access to the app.
Not all home systems are compatible with smart home thermostats, however, and prices start at $100, while traditional handheld models can be ordered for under $30.
Experts advise keeping an eye out for seasonal discounts as Black Friday is a pretty good opportunity. Some energy suppliers also offer rebates for this technology.
Other high-tech gadgets such as smart plugs, light bulbs, and power strips connected to a smart home assistant can also allow users to reduce the power of appliances that continue to draw energy even when not in use.
The US is making a historic climate investment
The US Senate has approved a key part of Joe Biden’s domestic political program, writes the BBC. The decision concerns the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” which earmarks $369 billion for climate action. It is also the most serious climate investment in American history and will allow the United States to reduce its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.
The bill could be passed as early as this week after it is sent to the House of Representatives, where Democrats hold a majority. It also includes raising corporate taxes, including a 15 percent minimum tax for large corporations, and cutting health care spending as part of a package exceeding $700 billion.
Democrats negotiated among themselves for 18 months to get the approval of every one of the party’s 50 senators and pass the Senate with the deciding vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.
US midterm elections are just months away, and if passed, the bill would revive President Joe Biden’s commitments to limit carbon emissions under the Paris Agreement.
The American head of state described this legislation as historic and promised to return the United States to the international stage in the fight against climate change.
Last month, he announced $2.2 billion to help build infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather and natural disasters. In recent years, the US has been hit by many deadly floods and wildfires.
